The York Regional Police Service Board has appointed Deputy Chief Paulo Da Silva as the next Chief of Police for York Regional Police. His appointment is effective June 27, 2026.

Board Chair Steve Pellegrini stated that the Board is confident in Chief-Designate Da Silva's leadership following a selection process. He will assume the role after Chief Jim MacSween's retirement on June 26, 2026. A transition period of eight weeks is planned for mentorship and knowledge transfer.

Chief-Designate Da Silva has over 31 years of policing experience, including more than five years as Deputy Chief. He has held various leadership roles within York Regional Police. As Deputy Chief, he led the Administration Branch and has overseen the Community Safety Branch for the past three years, which includes over 1,200 members.

He has been involved in community-focused policing, innovation, and professional development. Chief-Designate Da Silva has also volunteered with organizations such as Be a Hero (formerly Cops for Cancer) for Southlake Hospital, United Way of York Region, and St. John Ambulance.
